After a long, chilly winter complete spring snowstorms, everyone is eager to see the sun and get outside. April is a great time to start tackling spring home maintenance tasks to ensure your home is in tip-top shape for the warmer months ahead. We compiled a list of our recommendations to make sure your home is summer-ready.

6 Essential Spring Home Maintenance Tips

1. Replace HVAC Filter

The filter in your HVAC system is an essential part that keeps the air in your home clean and healthy. Depending on the type and brand of your HVAC, it's recommended to change your filter every 3-6 months for optimal performance. You might need to change the filter more frequently if you have pets or someone with allergies living in your house. A clogged filter can limit airflow, making your system work harder and raising your energy costs. Most homeowners can replace their HVAC filters themselves by verifying the recommended filter type in the owner's manual or by searching online.

2. Clean Gutters and Downspouts

You’ve probably noticed this task pops up in most of our home maintenance blogs, and that’s because it’s recommended that you clean out the gutters twice a year - once in spring and once in fall. Spring showers can result in blocked downspouts and gutters. Your roof, walls, and foundation may sustain damage if water cannot easily flow down the gutters and downspouts.

3. Replace Batteries in Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors are a crucial component of your home's safety system. Avoid the middle of the night beeping by making sure to change your smoke detectors’ battery twice a year. Doing this when you adjust your clocks is an easy way to remember when to change your smoke detector batteries.

4. Direction of Ceiling Fans

During the warmer months, ceiling fans may help keep your house cool and cozy. Yet, the efficiency of your ceiling fan may be affected by the way it rotates. Your ceiling fan should rotate counterclockwise in the spring and summer to produce a cool breeze that helps keep your house comfortable. The movement should be clockwise in the fall and winter to force warm air from the ceiling down.

5. Recaulk Windows and Doors

Your home may experience air leaks as a result of caulking that has been worn or broken over time around your windows and doors. Your energy costs may go up, and your home's temperature may be harder to control. Most homeowners can complete the task of recaulking their windows and doors on their own. To apply caulk, use a caulking gun, which you can get at your neighborhood hardware store. Before applying a new caulk, make sure to take out any outdated caulk and clean the area thoroughly.

6. Clear Out Foundation Vents

Foundation vents are important for air circulation in your crawl space, which can aid in preventing moisture buildup and the development of mold. Now is the time to make sure the vents are clean and clear and there are no holes in the screens that critters could use to enter your home. To clear any debris and guarantee optimal airflow, use a broom or leaf blower.

Please keep in mind that a professional may be needed for some of these activities, especially if you are uncomfortable working with your HVAC system, scaling ladders, or using power tools. It is important to check with a professional if you have questions about any of these duties, so they can either help you through the process or finish it for you.
