After April’s snowstorm you were probably wondering if we would ever see summer! Rest assured, the sun will return, and now is the perfect time to get your home ready for warmer weather. April also saw higher than average rainfall, so many spring projects had to wait for dry, warm weather. Use our May Home Checklist to get your home ready for summer so you can enjoy the sunny weather instead of dealing with home maintenance emergencies.

May Home Maintenance Projects Checklist

1. Service your HVAC unit and change air filters.

Keep your home cool all summer by having your air conditioner professionally serviced and cleaned. You can also prevent the extra sunlight from highlighting dust in your home by changing your HVAC air filters.

2. Clean windows and screens.

Take advantage of the extra sunlight by making sure your windows are crystal clear. If you prefer cleaning the outside of the windows yourself, look for products like Windex Outdoor Glass Cleaner to make the task a little easier.

3. Clean your ceiling fans.

Before you start up your fans, be sure to remove any dirt or dust from the blades.

4. Pack away winter sports gear, clothing, and footwear.

Make more room in your garage for bikes and summer gear by packing away skis, sleds, etc. This is also the time to stash away snow removal tools and snow tires.

5. Clean and repair decks.

If you have a deck, now is the time to pressure wash it and look for any repairs that need to be done. May is the perfect time to give it a new coat of stain since direct sunlight and high temperatures can cause it to dry too quickly, making it look uneven and more likely to break down quickly.

6. Blow off roof and clean gutters.

Full gutters are the major cause of water leaks from the exterior of a home. Protect yourself from summer storms by making sure your gutters are clear without any leaks or damage.

7. Pressure wash your driveway, sidewalks, and patio.

Take advantage of our sunny days by getting your outdoor space clean and ready to go now so you’ll be ready to relax outside and dine al fresco.

8. Plant your vegetable garden.

>May is the perfect time to plant vegetables. The soil is still moist, but not soggy, and you won’t need to worry about any frosts damaging your crops.

9. Plant summer annuals and replace flower baskets.

Brighten up the exterior of your house with a little color. Flowers are the perfect touch to make your patio enjoyment complete.
