As a top Beaverton Realtor, it’s important to share information about living in Beaverton and Washington County. We want our website to be a valuable tool for our clients and people moving to Beaverton. Check out these recent changes to the snow zone areas in Beaverton that could impact daily commutes during the winter.

Washington County takes proactive measures to ensure the safety of its residents and has added a new snow zone. Snow zones are active when lights on snow zone signs are flashing and are identified by signs following ODOT sign standards.

Here are the four areas in Washington County that are 'snow zones' – where traction devices are required in inclement weather.

1. 175th Avenue, between Scholls Ferry and Rigert roads

2. Grabhorn Road, between Farmington and Tile Flat roads

3. Barnes Road, 118th Avenue east to the County line, adjacent to a city of Portland snow zone

4. Cornell Road, Cedar Hills Boulevard east to the County line

These areas have high elevations and steep grades. Signs say, 'When Flashing, Chains or Snow Tires Required.' We turn on the flashing lights during periods of inclement weather to alert motorists. During icy and snowy weather conditions, vehicles without traction devices are more likely to be involved in crashes or have difficulty driving on slick surfaces. The county will require traction devices in these areas to improve safety and limit crashes. These devices also help cut down on the number of abandoned vehicles, allowing us to plow and sand roads more quickly.

Traction Devices are listed below.

1. Chains are traction devices fitted to vehicles' tires to help provide maximum grip.

2. Studded tires contain studs, made of a rigid material, that provide traction during winter weather conditions. Some versions have retractable studs.

3. Mountain Snowflake tires are all-season tires approved for use in the snow. They have sidewall marks with a mountain snowflake symbol.

4. Winter tires are designed for ice and snow. The tread has bigger gaps to provide traction in inclement weather.

5. "Tire socks" are made of a specially designed fabric that provides traction during winter weather conditions.

Our cooperation and adherence to these guidelines are crucial in ensuring a secure and pleasant winter for everyone in Washington County. Together, we can navigate the challenges of winter weather and enjoy the season safely. If you want to read the full article, please click HERE.
